Detect problems and capture changes in the enviornment defined by business logic. Detect, analyze, and remediate!

My Role

I was the lead product designer in charge of end to end design. Worked closely with product management, program manager, engineers, business analysts, data scientists, solution architects, and customer engagement team to meet deliveries. Managed roadmap and maintained on time deliveries.

The Challenge

This initiative is part of a multi year customer engagement project with a mining company. Customer co creation leveraging Maintenane Insights to provide insights into their business and help improve cost and production. The challenge was to help our customer in the mining industry track the different areas of operations and provide preventative maintenance with actionable insights to them so they can increase overall production output.

Discovery sessions to identify user needs

The project team leads went on a customer onsite workshop session to discover our client needs and requirements. Got a chance to do onsite interviews, shadow some workers, and do field research. We went through multiple workshop sessions to discover what our client needed to track in their business.

  • Production delay
  • Prognostics and Remaining useful life
  • Process Overloading

From the discovery, I created a pitch to align our goals

Worked with PMs to really understand the problem and what we are trying to achieve with the work here

We then identified our main users and their needs

We identified the 2 main personas that uses events and mapped out what their day in life was like, goals, and pain points to really understand our user. We then highlighted the main user needs that we discovered.

Created user stories based on the user needs

After analyzing the results from the interviews and other discovery material I created user stories to map out the user needs and their actions.

Mapped out the user flows

This will help me understand a bit more regarding what tasks the user is trying to acheive and how they get to it.

Identify event lifecycle to see how it all fits together

Collaborated with PM, PO, and BA to iterate on event lifecycle.

Design considerations

  • Templatized approach
  • Scalable to multiple different events
  • Consistent guidelines
  • Show key information first
  • Provide actionable insights
  • Simple and intuitive visual analytics

Designs

Event details page consists of high level details about event, visual insights as to what happened, recommended actions to remediate, event history to identify any patterns or similarities.

Got feedback from stakeholders and users

Had feedback sessions with our users and stakeholders to get their input. Also sent out survey to get feedback on current usabilty and satisfaction. The feedback helps shape the design changes and areas we need to focus on for improvement.

Conclusion and next steps

Great interaction with customer team and this project has been extended as phase 2 was signed. There will be additional new features and events to add as we expand across more operations in the coal mine. Plans to enhance event handling, notifiation and event management system while continuously improving overall user experience every release!
